Angular contact ball bearings

Angular contact ball bearings have the raceways in the inner and outer rings offset relative to each other in the centerline of the bearing.
This means that the bearings are designed to transfer combined loads, i.e. simultaneously acting radial and axial loads.

The axial load capacity of angular contact ball bearings increases with increasing contact angle.
The contact angle is defined as the angle between the line connecting the contact points between the ball and the contact points between the ball and the raceways in the radial plane, along which the combined load is transferred from one raceway to the other, and a line perpendicular to the centerline of the bearing.

The most common angular contact ball bearing designs are:

  • four-point contact ball bearing
  • double row angular contact ball bearings
  • single row angular contact ball bearings

Properties

Can transfer combined loads:

- axial loads in only one direction for single row bearings.

- axial loads in both directions for double row angular contact ball bearings and four-point contact ball bearings.

High load-bearing capacity:

- The lower shoulder allows for the mounting of a large number of balls in single row bearings, which gives them their relatively high load-bearing capacity.

Good running properties:

- high speeds, sudden accelerations and decelerations are possible.
